Eye emergencies are eye injuries or symptoms that threaten your eye health or vision, and require immediate attention. It’s always better to be safe than sorry — if you’re unsure, seek an expert’s opinion.

Examples of eye emergencies include but aren’t limited to:

• Loss of vision
• Seeing double vision
• Sudden painful or red eye
• Foreign objects entering the eye
• Eye infections, such as pink eye
• Scratches in eyes

Should You Call Us, Or Go to the ER?

Many times, an emergency eye doctor is a better choice than visiting an emergency room for an eye injury — we are more likely to have specialized equipment or knowledge specific to eye care.

What NOT to Do During
an Eye-Related Emergency

The most important things to do are remain calm and seek medical attention immediately. Don’t attempt to correct any issues yourself, as you may cause additional damage.

• Press or rub an injured eye
• Attempt to remove a foreign object from the eye
• Use dry cotton or instruments like tweezers near your eye
• Ignore the problem
